Automated Mapping

The-promise of Automated Mapping is the ability to create map products that meet high standards with high efficiency. When an automated mapping process is used to create or change some characteristic of a map or group of maps, thousands of drafting operations can be accomplished with a single click, with the assurance that 100% of the desired changes have been made.

Experience and Expertise

TCI has specialized in automated mapping tools and services for over 25 years. TCI’s president has been professionally involved in automated mapping software development and map production since 1988, and TCI has been an Autodesk Registered Developer since 1991. We have completed hundreds of projects and developed hundreds of automated mapping tools.

Off the Shelf or Made to Order

We can process your existing maps using our extensive array of automated mapping tools to quickly deliver a low cost solution. We can customize our commercial tools (MapTools and CoriMap™) to solve more difficult problems and deliver a project with custom tools to support your in-house staff. This dual capability means we can deliver practically any map product you can describe, using your existing data.

Project Experience – Creation and Updating

Metro RLIS (Portland Oregon) – New digital parcel basemap from paper records
Created a 380 square mile parcel basemap of rural Clackamas County using hundreds of scanned tax assessor maps. Automated Rubbersheeting guided by GPS control assured accuracy.

AT&T– Construction drawings from conventional field survey data
Created a 380 square mile parcel basemap of rural Clackamas County using hundreds of scanned tax assessor maps. Automated Rubbersheeting guided by GPS control assured accuracy.

City of Oregon City Oregon – Parcel basemap and utility overlay products from paper records
Created a 380 square mile parcel basemap of rural Clackamas County using hundreds of scanned tax assessor maps. Automated Rubbersheeting guided by GPS control assured accuracy.

RCN Telecom – Construction drawing packages from manual walkout records
Created thousands of construction drawings for a fast track “Last Mile” telecom project in the San Francisco bay area. Automated Corridor Mapping tools allowed us to deliver fast turn around and full compliance with all applicable municipal standards.

Conoco Pipe Lines – Custom Software to support the creation of as-built records from GPS data
Our five year development relationship with Conoco (now ConocoPhillips) yielded a suite of automated mapping tools to create and format pipeline facilities maps. Special capabilities include a robust GPS interface and an automated alignment sheet generator.

Level 3 – Long Haul Fiber Optic construction drawings from GPS data
Created a 380 square mile parcel basemap of rural Clackamas County using hundreds of scanned tax assessor maps. Automated Rubbersheeting guided by GPS control assured accuracy.

City of Lake Oswego Oregon – Update existing facilities maps from paper and digital as-builts
Updated a dense 10 square mile Water Atlas to integrate maintenance and construction information with existing maps to create an accurate up-to-date water distribution facilities record. We reviewed over 500 pages of printed as-builts and referenced another 1500+ sheets as images.

Project Experience – RePurposing

We define RePurposing as a process to manipulate existing facilities maps to suit a new purpose. RePurposing can conserve your investments in map data entry and extend its usefulness.

City of Beaverton Oregon – Consolidate and standardize dissimilar maps to fit a new standard
The City had five different representations of its water distribution system, some plain graphical only maps and some with extensive attributes and database links. We created a single map overlay that contained the most current information, represented by new standard symbology and maintained all necessary attribute data.

City of Gresham Oregon – Produce a 3D Water facilities map from 2D maps and Aerial Topo data
The City needed an accurate 3D version of its water distribution system for analysis and modeling operations. We used 3D point data derived from aerial photos to guide custom functions to snap existing features to their true 3D position and interpolated Z values for intermediate features.

City of Oregon City Oregon – Master Address Book with automated printing tools
We planned and produced a 308 page high detail address book. An existing parcel basemap was updated to include site addresses and building centroid symbols linked to an external tax assessor database. We developed custom software to automate the plotting of map book sheets.

City of Portland Oregon, Bureau of Environmental Services – Automated drawing conversion
This client regularly receives large numbers of drawings derived from MicroStation DGN files. They maintain sewer facilities maps with AutoCAD and enforce strict drawing standards. We analyzed their problem and developed an automated function using our standard MapTools product to make over 100 changes to the drawings and process hundreds of drawings unattended.

City of Portland Oregon, CGIS – Automated AutoCAD to Arc/Info conversion
Portland’s Corporate GIS group needed a method to regularly convert a set of highly customized AutoCAD sewer drawings (maintained by the BES) into a format consistent with their Arc/Info GeoDatabase. It was crucial to maintain the facilities data which was stored using AutoCAD block attributes and Extended Entity Data (EED) structures.

We created custom functions to preprocess the AutoCAD drawings and export them to Arc/Info format. This allowed the inclusion of information that would not normally have been exported, such as Dimensions, Annotations and tabular data stored as EED. The final solution uses MapTools for the automatic / unattended conversion of large groups of drawings.

Project Experience – ReCalibration

ReCalibration is a process that manipulates the locations of existing map features to more closely fit a real world reference. We developed our industrial strength rubbersheeting processor (Adjust) over 10 years ago and have used it extensively in edgematching and recalibration projects for many clients. We are considered by many as the worlds foremost rubbersheeting expert and we are the only service bureau that can deliver unlimited scope, engineering quality rubbersheeting guided by GPS data.

City of Lake Oswego – Rubbersheet existing facilities maps to fit a new basemap using GPS
Lake Oswego’s water distribution system map covers 10 square miles and contains over 10,000 features. When the City acquired a new more accurate parcel basemap the need for recalibration became evident.

GPS Guided Rubbersheeting
The City had recently completed an extensive GPS survey of utility features which included over 3000 water system features. Since our rubbersheeting product can directly use GPS data, we were able to use many of these to guide the automated rubbersheeting process. The final result was an up-to-date, accurate water system atlas that perfectly fit their new parcel basemap and GPS data.
